Bed Bugs Infest Just 1 U.S. City More Than NYC, Survey …

June 5th, 2019 by admin

NEW YORK This is one crown Phildelphia is welcome to.

A new survey of the 50 most bed bug-ridden cities in the U.S. shows only the City of Brotherly Love has more of the disgusting creatures than New York City.

The list was put together by Terminix and ServiceMasters, which wage war on the blood-sucking creatures with products and services. The ranking is based on the number of times Terminix was called out in 2018 to wipe out bed bugs.

Though the insects are associated with bedding and mattresses, they also hide in upholstered furniture and behind baseboards, they also hitch rides in travelers’ suitcases, purses, jackets and other personal belongings.

“Bed bugs continue to pose concerns for public health, as their presence is felt across the country, in cities large and small,” Matthew Stevenson, president of Terminix Residential, said in a statement, saying the nearly decade-old ranking has “helped bring awareness to an epidemic that can lead to a variety of negative physical health, mental health and financial consequences.”

About one-fifth, or 22 percent, of Americans have had a bed bug encounter, according to a national poll of 1,516 randomly selected U.S. adults conducted in March by the market research company Maru/Blue. The number of children who have had bed bug encounters was higher, at 35 percent.

The top 10 cities for bed bug infestations are:

Many U.S. travelers don’t know what precautions to take to protect themselves against bed bugs. Some things to keep in mind:

New York City (NYC) Hotel Bed Bug Lawyer – Whitney, LLP

June 5th, 2019 by admin

New York City is packed with hotels, from world-class luxury resorts to economy motels for travelers on a budget. But with a habitat that stretches across the entire United States, bed bugs are not choosy about where they rent rooms. With their tough bodies, short breeding cycles, and fast-crawling legs, bed bugs have successfully invaded all types of NYC hotels including famous five-star establishments.

If you or one of your family members was bitten by bed bugs at a hotel in New York City, the bed bug hotel infestation lawyers of Whitney, LLP can help you fight for compensation. You may be entitled to damages for your medical bills, replacement of infested personal property, and other losses you incurred due to the infestation. Contact us online to set up a free legal consultation, or call Whitney, LLP at (410) 583-8000 to speak with an NYC bed bug attorney today.

While some insects announce themselves with bright colors or loud noises, bed bugs often go unnoticed until it is already too late, and the victim has been bitten multiple times. There are several reasons for this. For example, bed bugs are very small at less than one-quarter of an inch, making them difficult to spot. Their drab brown color helps them to blend in with many surfaces, acting like a natural camouflage.

Bed bugs are also nocturnal, which means they normally emerge at night, feeding while their victims sleep. Though nocturnal feeders, bed bugs can be spotted during the day if they are disturbed, or if the infestation is severe. The stains and droppings they leave behind, which are generally concentrated in and around mattresses, are also telltale signs that bed bugs are present in a hotel room.

Bed bugs are flightless and are not capable of hopping long distances like fleas or grasshoppers. They move around by crawling or, on a larger scale, by traveling cross-country in hotel luggage. If your hotel is infested, you risk bringing the bed bugs back home with you.

The answer to this question depends on the individual. Reactions range from virtually nonexistent to extremely severe, with some of the more serious potential complications discussed in the section below. For most individuals, bed bug bites are similar to flea or mosquito bites, producing itchy, pink welts one to several days after feeding occurs. Since feeding normally occurs at night while victims are asleep, most people do not notice and are therefore unable to prevent being bitten.

In most cases, bed bug bites do not pose serious health risks, other than minor skin irritation. Unfortunately, there are medical exceptions to this general rule. Though uncommon, some individuals have reported experiencing anaphylaxis a rapid-onset, potentially fatal allergic reaction in response to bed bug bites. Common signs of anaphylaxis, which demands urgent medical intervention, include facial swelling, nausea and/or vomiting, respiratory problems, and shock.

Anaphylaxis is not the only danger associated with bed bug bites. Because the bites can be very itchy, victims have a tendency to scratch the bitten areas, creating a risk of infection. Vigorous scratching can tear open wounds in the skin, creating an entry point for harmful bacteria. Infected bed bug bites may ooze pus or discharge, feel warm or stiff to the touch, or become extremely painful and sensitive. Examples of infections related to bed bugs include cellulitis, impetigo, lymphangitis, and ecthyma.

From a bed bugs perspective, a hotel, with its continual supply of new food sources and hiding places, offers the perfect environment in which to breed. NYC hotel owners and property managers should be aware of the risks posed by bed bugs particularly during the summer months. During the summer, more people are traveling, vacationing, and staying in hotels. At the same time, summer heat causes breeding cycles to accelerate, leading New York Citys bed bug population to explode.

Hotels must take adequate precautions to exterminate bed bugs and other pests, ensuring that guests receive rooms which are reasonably clean and free of hazards. If a hotel rents out a room which is infested by bed bugs, the manager and/or other parties may be liable if guests are consequently bitten or suffer harm. Ultimately, prevailing in a personal injury claim depends on proving that the hotel was somehow negligent or reckless, resulting in your bed bug injuries.

If you wait too long to file your claim, you may be barred by the statute of limitations, meaning a legal deadline will prevent your claim from proceeding. If you believe you were the victim of a hotel room infestation, it is in your best interests to discuss the matter with an NYC bed bug lawyer as soon as possible. For a free legal consultation, contact Whitney, LLP online, or call our law offices at (410) 583-8000 today.

Dont Let the Bed Bugs Bite: Orkin Releases New Top 50 Cities List – Orkin Termite Treatment, Pest Control & Exterminator Service

May 19th, 2019 by admin

Baltimore Holds Top Spot on Bed Bugs Cities ListATLANTA (January 3, 2017) Baltimore tops this years Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, released today by pest control leader Orkin. In the six years Orkin has released the bed bug city rankings, this is the first time Baltimore has made the top five, moving up nine spots since last year. Four metro regions — Las Vegas, Portland, Salt Lake City and Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem — made the list for the first time this year.

The list is based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2015 November 30, 2016. This ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.

We have more people affected by bed bugs in the United States now than ever before, says Orkin Entomologist and Director of Technical Services Ron Harrison, Ph.D., adding that bed bugs are a growing issue. They were virtually unheard of in the U.S. 10 years ago, he says.

According to a 2015 Bugs without Borders Survey by the National Pest Management Association, nearly all (99.6 percent) of pest professionals nationwide have treated bed bugs in the past year, up from five, 10 and 15 years ago.

Bed bugs are great hitchhikers because they travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings. Bed bugs can be found anywhere, from single family homes, apartments and hotel, to public places like movie theaters, public transit and libraries and offices.

Anyone can get bed bugs in their home. They are not a sign of uncleanliness. Bed bugs only need blood to survive. We have treated for bed bugs in everything from million dollar homes to public housing, Harrison says.

Bed bugs can be difficult to detect and treat because of their small size and ability to survive up to a year without feeding. They are about the size of an apple seed when fully grown, and can hide around seams of a mattress, behind headboards and in cracks and crevices, usually within a five-foot radius of the bed. The first signs of a bed bug infestation are often the bed bugs themselves or small dark stains bed bugs can leave behind.

People may have bed bugs and not know it, because many people have no physical reaction to bed bug bites, Harrison says. Thats why its important for people everywhere to inspect for bed bugs regularly.

While the 50 metro areas listed above required the most treatments for bed bugs in 2016, Orkin has treated for bed bugs in all 50 states and around the world. To help detect and prevent bed bugs, Orkin recommends homeowners and travelers do the following:

Bed bugs can quickly become a major problem, as they can spread from room to room if undetected and allowed to multiply. Anyone who suspects a bed bug infestation should contact a pest management professional immediately.

What is this? Bug filled with blood… [a: not a bed bug …

May 12th, 2019 by admin

I’ll bump this…

Now I crushed the other one. This one didn’t contain any red blood at all.

So now it got me confused. Maybe I didn’t look closely enough, maybe they weren’t the same. I was pretty sure before but I should have shot a close up with the camera before I crushed the first one. Stupid me.

To you entomologists, is the red blood normal in other common bugs than bb and mosquitos? If the two bugs were the same species, Hemiptera-something, what kind is it and is this specific species a predator?

I hope my pictures were good enough and that some bug super-expert can shine some light on my question.

Btw, I sent the pictures to my PCO, they said it was a carpet beetle. I don’t think so. I asked them if it’s normal for a carpet beetle to have red blood. They said yes. That’s wrong, even I know that. I don’t trust my PCO much….

New Yorks Fifth Avenue Store has bed bugs – Bedbugger.com

April 21st, 2019 by admin

According to Gothamist, the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in New York City has bed bugs and has had them for over a month. (Gothamists story is worth viewing if only for the revival of their intergalactic bed bug warfare imagery which we cant reproduce here.)

The New York Posts source suggests the bed bugs were spotted in employee-only areas like a managers office, but also in a public area, in a roped off table:

One worker said the issue has been going on for nearly a month and Friday was the first day they acknowledged they found something.

The employee said the issue started about three to four weeks ago during the overnight hours at the 24-hour store, which frequently has homeless visitors, when a table on the second floor was cordoned off because a bed bug was found, believed to have come from one of the homeless visitors.

Everyone is quick to blame the easy target. I cant believe that after so many years, this is still the level of discourse around bed bugs and who to blame for their appearance.

Sure, bed bugs can be a particularly persistent problem for some homeless folks, who – once having made contact with bed bugs – may have more trouble getting rid of them, depending on access to showers, laundry facilities, and other factors.

However, anyone could have brought bed bugs into the store – employees, managers, tourists, people who live nearby in fancy buildings, hipsters, and so on. Bed bugs dont target people of lower social standing. They are just easier to deal with when you have more money.

Which does raise questions about why the Apple Store – run by a big multinational corporation – would wait a month to address such an issue?

Glad to hear the problem is being addressed. If you had any doubts whether spring has sprung, the appearance of bed bugs in public places is a good sign the warm weather is once again hastening their spread.

After weeks of sightings and a visit from a bed-bug-sniffing beagle, an employee reportedly filmed a video of a bed bug crawling on their sweater.

One of the extremely small insects was also found in the managers office, according to The Post, prompting preventative spraying by an exterminator and the brief store closure.

It was just mayhem, an employee said. There was a mass exodus employees were freaking out that they felt really unsafe and management kept giving them the runaround.

According to the news outlet, employees have since been informed by management that the threat is over.

Bed bugs are insects that typically come out at night and bite. Although the bites are not dangerous, they can cause itching.

The bugs themselves can be extremely difficult to get rid of because they are small and expert hiders.

Bed bug infestations usually require help from a pest control firm.

Worried About Bed Bugs in NYC? Treatment & Signs in New …

April 16th, 2019 by admin

Sleep tight, dont let the bed bugs bite is a common — if not totally gross — thing many parents tell their children at night. But chances are, you never gave those creepy crawlers a second thought until you moved to New York City.

Unfortunately, the horror of a bed bug infestation is a pretty common experience in NYC. According to pest control company Orkins annual Top 50 Bed Bugs List, confirmed cases of bed bugs increased during 2015, making New York City the fourth-worst urban regionin the nation for these pests.Local exterminators at M&M Pest Controlagree.

The bedbug threat has definitely gotten worse over the years, confirmed client service representatives at M&M Stephanie Kollgaard and Hunter Konkle, as well as directors Kevin Carrillo and Timothy Wong. Incoming requests for bedbug treatment or inspections have grown consistently by 20% annually for the past several years.

But lets back up a little bit. If you dont already know, bed bugs are parasitic insects that have a particular penchant for human blood. While they have not been known to transmit diseases, they are literal ankle biters and will turn your mattress into a colony. And its not something a New Yorker should take lightly: Bed bugs can be picked up everywhere from the R train to a swanky hotel.

Despite common misconceptions, bed bugs do not target messy or dirty apartments (though that certainly makes it easier for the insects to go unnoticed). Everyone is at risk, and the chances of picking up a bed bug are infinitely greater in metropolitan areas, where people move often and quickly.Increased travel and foot traffic brings a spike during the summer months.

More than anything, bed bugs will screw with your head. After my own traumatic bed bug experience, I slipped into what can only be described as post-traumatic infestation disorder. I had nightmares about them, thought every piece of fuzz on my comforter was a nag, and scoured my sheets obsessively before bed.

Whether you think you have an infestation or want to protect yourself against the enemy, this step-by-step guide will tell you everything you need to know (and hopefully never have to use) about dealing with bed bugs.

Yes, you can get bed bugs from clothing stores because bed bugs infestation has been found in shipments of new clothes.

But washing and using a dryer will kill themso, as soon as you get home, just put all your clothes youre wearing and the new clothes you tried on and might have bought, in a clothes washer and then use the dryer and youll be fine.

Bed bugs are mostly spread because of international travelling and people staying in bed bugs infested hotels and bringing the bed bugs back home in their suitcase and on their clothes. My ex-husband did a lot of international travelling and he would put his dry cleaning clothing into a plastic bag (which I would take to the dry cleaner) and all his other clothes directly in the washing machine. He never brought his suitcase inside the house until it was checked up and all the clothes washed.

Now, concert seats or theaters seatsthose are nasty.

At least on airplane seats, they use a flimsy Velcro headset (hopefully no louse will get off it).

According to study, every theater seat has fecal matterpeople farting while watching a movie Sitting on somebody elses fecal matter wont really hurt you. Just drop your clothes in the washing machine when you get home.

But what if they have lice in their head and dont care about spreading it to you? The theater cleaning crew dont clean and vacuum the seats between showsthey just clean up the popcorns on the floor and pick up the candy wrappers and the empty soda cups.

I had lice in my head, twice in my life, with that going out of my mind itching, which was spread to me by my kids when there was a lice infestation at their school and I was using the same sofa as they did. I had to super clean (wash and steam) all the fabric in my house, everything on the beds, the sofa, the carpet and shampooed my hair several times a day with harsh lice shampoo and use that annoying comb to get the lice eggs outmy kids got their heads shaved off, after I gave up shampooing them and combing them all the time.

I did not go to a theater to see a movie all that time because I knew I could spread my lice to the next person sitting in my seat. Im considerate but other people are not. What if you have to go somewhere and take a plane while having a lice problem? Just pity the next person sitting in your seat.

Edit: For bed bugs, start to worry when you smell a raspberry like odor, which indicates a larger infestationnot an I smell raspberry so it must be nice. Hopefully, sometimes smelling raspberry is just your cat marking its territory in all the corners of a room, your brain has a way to make awful smells smell better.
