Address : 154 Herkimer Street, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States, 11216

Details: An incident observed and resolved in the spring of 2018. First spotted alive on the lower end of the bed after noticing numerous itchy welts around ankles, calves and, eventually, across the entire body. Three chemical spray extermination sessions and numerous trips to the laundromats dryers solved the issue after a month or so of living with the infestation. The landlord opted to pay for the cheaper extermination process, rather than the alternative heat treatment that may have provided a quicker solution. We wouldn't suggest that these details keep you from choosing to live in this building in the future, only to keep it on record knowing that courts should hold the owners liable for any health and safety risks incurred by bed bugs.

bed bugs & denial! – Review of The Maxwell New York City …

September 11th, 2019 by admin

Booked a Sat nite at this hotel at a AAA rate of ~$230. Stayed in a Spectacular Room, had a good night's stay and would consider staying here again if it's just the mrs. & I but not if our child comes along (as she did on this visit).

Room---Like most Ws, quite modest in size yet stylish, with an excellent bed. This room was compact, with little room around the bed to maneuver. The bed was super comfy. The BA was in good shape, w/the usual Bliss toiletries and plenty of of towels.

Service---We didn't require much on the way of service from the hotel. We checked bags with the bellman as the room wasn't ready when we arrived (early, before checkin time) and valeted our car. The people we interacted were fine -- a bit aloof, as has been our experience in many trendy NY hotels, but not rude.

Hotel facilities---I used the gym for a workout and we had dinner in the hotel restaurant. The gym was surprisingly large, with a good selection of equipment in very good shape. Chilled towels and cold water was readily available. Dinner was fine. Simple offerings but fairly priced & the service was very friendly.

The location is good, for our needs anyway. Only 1-2 blocks from a stop for the 6 subway line, which we used multiple times to get uptown & back.

Misc---This hotel is primarily geared to business travelers or the typical W client (singles and childless couples). I think it would work fine w/older children, w/kids 9-10 and above, but the rooms are very snug, so it could be tough maneuvering with 3 adult-size people in a room.

Bed Bugs: How to Identify Bedbugs and How to Get … – WebMD

September 11th, 2019 by admin

In this Article In this Article In this Article

Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bedbugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.

Bedbugs do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime.

Immature bedbugs, called nymphs, shed their skins five times before reaching maturity and require a meal of blood before each shedding. Under favorable conditions the bugs can develop fully in as little as a month and produce three or more generations per year.

Although they are a nuisance, they are not thought to transmit diseases.

Bedbugs may enter your home undetected through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches, and other items. Their flattened bodies make it possible for them to fit into tiny spaces, about the width of a credit card. Bedbugs do not have nests like ants or bees, but tend to live in groups in hiding places. Their initial hiding places are typically in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where they have easy access to people to bite in the night.

Over time, however, they may scatter through the bedroom, moving into any crevice or protected location. They may also spread to nearby rooms or apartments.

Because bedbugs live solely on blood, having them in your home is not a sign of dirtiness. You are as likely to find them in immaculate homes and hotel rooms as in filthy ones.

Bedbugs are active mainly at night and usually bite people while they are sleeping. They feed by piercing the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak. The bugs feed from three to 10 minutes to become engorged and then crawl away unnoticed.

Most bedbug bites are painless at first, but later turn into itchy welts. Unlike flea bites that are mainly around the ankles, bedbug bites are on any area of skin exposed while sleeping. Also, the bites do not have a red spot in the center like flea bites do.

People who don't realize they have a bedbug infestation may attribute the itching and welts to other causes, such as mosquitoes. To confirm bedbug bites, you must find and identify the bugs themselves.

If you wake up with itchy areas you didn't have when you went to sleep, you may have bedbugs, particularly if you got a used bed or other used furniture around the time the bites started. Other signs that you have bedbugs include:

If you suspect an infestation, remove all bedding and check it carefully for signs of the bugs or their excrement. Remove the dust cover over the bottom of the box springs and examine the seams in the wood framing. Peel back the fabric where it is stapled to the wood frame.

Also, check the area around the bed, including inside books, telephones or radios, the edge of the carpet, and even in electrical outlets. Check your closet, because bedbugs can attach to clothing. If you are uncertain about signs of bedbugs, call an exterminator, who will know what to look for.

If you find signs of infestation, begin steps to get rid of the bugs and prevent their return.

Getting rid of bedbugs begins with cleaning up the places where bedbugs live. This should include the following:

If your mattress is infested, you may want to get rid of it and get a new one, but take care to rid the rest of your home of bedbugs or they will infest your new mattress.

While cleaning up infested areas will be helpful in controlling bedbugs, getting rid of them usually requires chemical treatments. Because treating your bed and bedroom with insecticides can be harmful, it is important to use products that can be used safely in bedrooms. Do not treat mattresses and bedding unless the label specifically says you can use them on bedding.

Generally it is safest and most effective to hire an experienced pest control professional for bedbug extermination.

Bed Bugs – New York City Forum – TripAdvisor

September 7th, 2019 by admin

I may have no right to chime in here as, to the best of my knowledge, I have never encountered bed bugs. But check as others have said when you get to your room, then relax. If you get bites (from bed bugs or something else; it has never been clear to me from complaints I see here and elsewhere if they really were certified bedbugs) then don't worry; as far as I know they cause a rash, not a fatal illness. Take whatever precautions you're supposed to take once exposed to avoid carrying them elsewhere, then get on with your life.

I think they were far more common in the generations of our immigrant ancestors, perhaps even taken for granted, and I think some of the horror, embarrassment associated with them have to do with the fact that this is something we associate with poor immigrants, not our superclean, successful selves. I could only laugh when I read the accounts of people who got them in their Park Avenue apartments. Should they or should they not tell their coop board or neighbors? SHould they or should they not fire the immigrant household employees who may have brought them in (on the other hand, it could have been their own clean selves on that safari to Namibia).

Immigrants learned to deal with them and maybe we should too.

Bed Bugs Infest Just 1 U.S. City More Than NYC, Survey …

June 5th, 2019 by admin

NEW YORK This is one crown Phildelphia is welcome to.

A new survey of the 50 most bed bug-ridden cities in the U.S. shows only the City of Brotherly Love has more of the disgusting creatures than New York City.

The list was put together by Terminix and ServiceMasters, which wage war on the blood-sucking creatures with products and services. The ranking is based on the number of times Terminix was called out in 2018 to wipe out bed bugs.

Though the insects are associated with bedding and mattresses, they also hide in upholstered furniture and behind baseboards, they also hitch rides in travelers' suitcases, purses, jackets and other personal belongings.

"Bed bugs continue to pose concerns for public health, as their presence is felt across the country, in cities large and small," Matthew Stevenson, president of Terminix Residential, said in a statement, saying the nearly decade-old ranking has "helped bring awareness to an epidemic that can lead to a variety of negative physical health, mental health and financial consequences."

About one-fifth, or 22 percent, of Americans have had a bed bug encounter, according to a national poll of 1,516 randomly selected U.S. adults conducted in March by the market research company Maru/Blue. The number of children who have had bed bug encounters was higher, at 35 percent.

The top 10 cities for bed bug infestations are:

Many U.S. travelers don't know what precautions to take to protect themselves against bed bugs. Some things to keep in mind:

New York City (NYC) Hotel Bed Bug Lawyer – Whitney, LLP

June 5th, 2019 by admin

New York City is packed with hotels, from world-class luxury resorts to economy motels for travelers on a budget. But with a habitat that stretches across the entire United States, bed bugs are not choosy about where they rent rooms. With their tough bodies, short breeding cycles, and fast-crawling legs, bed bugs have successfully invaded all types of NYC hotels including famous five-star establishments.

If you or one of your family members was bitten by bed bugs at a hotel in New York City, the bed bug hotel infestation lawyers of Whitney, LLP can help you fight for compensation. You may be entitled to damages for your medical bills, replacement of infested personal property, and other losses you incurred due to the infestation. Contact us online to set up a free legal consultation, or call Whitney, LLP at (410) 583-8000 to speak with an NYC bed bug attorney today.

While some insects announce themselves with bright colors or loud noises, bed bugs often go unnoticed until it is already too late, and the victim has been bitten multiple times. There are several reasons for this. For example, bed bugs are very small at less than one-quarter of an inch, making them difficult to spot. Their drab brown color helps them to blend in with many surfaces, acting like a natural camouflage.

Bed bugs are also nocturnal, which means they normally emerge at night, feeding while their victims sleep. Though nocturnal feeders, bed bugs can be spotted during the day if they are disturbed, or if the infestation is severe. The stains and droppings they leave behind, which are generally concentrated in and around mattresses, are also telltale signs that bed bugs are present in a hotel room.

Bed bugs are flightless and are not capable of hopping long distances like fleas or grasshoppers. They move around by crawling or, on a larger scale, by traveling cross-country in hotel luggage. If your hotel is infested, you risk bringing the bed bugs back home with you.

The answer to this question depends on the individual. Reactions range from virtually nonexistent to extremely severe, with some of the more serious potential complications discussed in the section below. For most individuals, bed bug bites are similar to flea or mosquito bites, producing itchy, pink welts one to several days after feeding occurs. Since feeding normally occurs at night while victims are asleep, most people do not notice and are therefore unable to prevent being bitten.

In most cases, bed bug bites do not pose serious health risks, other than minor skin irritation. Unfortunately, there are medical exceptions to this general rule. Though uncommon, some individuals have reported experiencing anaphylaxis a rapid-onset, potentially fatal allergic reaction in response to bed bug bites. Common signs of anaphylaxis, which demands urgent medical intervention, include facial swelling, nausea and/or vomiting, respiratory problems, and shock.

Anaphylaxis is not the only danger associated with bed bug bites. Because the bites can be very itchy, victims have a tendency to scratch the bitten areas, creating a risk of infection. Vigorous scratching can tear open wounds in the skin, creating an entry point for harmful bacteria. Infected bed bug bites may ooze pus or discharge, feel warm or stiff to the touch, or become extremely painful and sensitive. Examples of infections related to bed bugs include cellulitis, impetigo, lymphangitis, and ecthyma.

From a bed bugs perspective, a hotel, with its continual supply of new food sources and hiding places, offers the perfect environment in which to breed. NYC hotel owners and property managers should be aware of the risks posed by bed bugs particularly during the summer months. During the summer, more people are traveling, vacationing, and staying in hotels. At the same time, summer heat causes breeding cycles to accelerate, leading New York Citys bed bug population to explode.

Hotels must take adequate precautions to exterminate bed bugs and other pests, ensuring that guests receive rooms which are reasonably clean and free of hazards. If a hotel rents out a room which is infested by bed bugs, the manager and/or other parties may be liable if guests are consequently bitten or suffer harm. Ultimately, prevailing in a personal injury claim depends on proving that the hotel was somehow negligent or reckless, resulting in your bed bug injuries.

If you wait too long to file your claim, you may be barred by the statute of limitations, meaning a legal deadline will prevent your claim from proceeding. If you believe you were the victim of a hotel room infestation, it is in your best interests to discuss the matter with an NYC bed bug lawyer as soon as possible. For a free legal consultation, contact Whitney, LLP online, or call our law offices at (410) 583-8000 today.

Dont Let the Bed Bugs Bite: Orkin Releases New Top 50 Cities List – Orkin Termite Treatment, Pest Control & Exterminator Service

May 19th, 2019 by admin

Baltimore Holds Top Spot on Bed Bugs Cities ListATLANTA (January 3, 2017) Baltimore tops this years Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, released today by pest control leader Orkin. In the six years Orkin has released the bed bug city rankings, this is the first time Baltimore has made the top five, moving up nine spots since last year. Four metro regions -- Las Vegas, Portland, Salt Lake City and Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem -- made the list for the first time this year.

The list is based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2015 November 30, 2016. This ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.

We have more people affected by bed bugs in the United States now than ever before, says Orkin Entomologist and Director of Technical Services Ron Harrison, Ph.D., adding that bed bugs are a growing issue. They were virtually unheard of in the U.S. 10 years ago, he says.

According to a 2015 Bugs without Borders Survey by the National Pest Management Association, nearly all (99.6 percent) of pest professionals nationwide have treated bed bugs in the past year, up from five, 10 and 15 years ago.

Bed bugs are great hitchhikers because they travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings. Bed bugs can be found anywhere, from single family homes, apartments and hotel, to public places like movie theaters, public transit and libraries and offices.

Anyone can get bed bugs in their home. They are not a sign of uncleanliness. Bed bugs only need blood to survive. We have treated for bed bugs in everything from million dollar homes to public housing, Harrison says.

Bed bugs can be difficult to detect and treat because of their small size and ability to survive up to a year without feeding. They are about the size of an apple seed when fully grown, and can hide around seams of a mattress, behind headboards and in cracks and crevices, usually within a five-foot radius of the bed. The first signs of a bed bug infestation are often the bed bugs themselves or small dark stains bed bugs can leave behind.

People may have bed bugs and not know it, because many people have no physical reaction to bed bug bites, Harrison says. Thats why its important for people everywhere to inspect for bed bugs regularly.

While the 50 metro areas listed above required the most treatments for bed bugs in 2016, Orkin has treated for bed bugs in all 50 states and around the world. To help detect and prevent bed bugs, Orkin recommends homeowners and travelers do the following:

Bed bugs can quickly become a major problem, as they can spread from room to room if undetected and allowed to multiply. Anyone who suspects a bed bug infestation should contact a pest management professional immediately.

What is this? Bug filled with blood… [a: not a bed bug …

May 12th, 2019 by admin

I'll bump this...

Now I crushed the other one. This one didn't contain any red blood at all.

So now it got me confused. Maybe I didn't look closely enough, maybe they weren't the same. I was pretty sure before but I should have shot a close up with the camera before I crushed the first one. Stupid me.

To you entomologists, is the red blood normal in other common bugs than bb and mosquitos? If the two bugs were the same species, Hemiptera-something, what kind is it and is this specific species a predator?

I hope my pictures were good enough and that some bug super-expert can shine some light on my question.

Btw, I sent the pictures to my PCO, they said it was a carpet beetle. I don't think so. I asked them if it's normal for a carpet beetle to have red blood. They said yes. That's wrong, even I know that. I don't trust my PCO much....
